My Journey Into Edible Gardening
When my son was almost three, we moved from Venice to Mid-City, Los Angeles. Compared to the smaller properties by the beach, our yard seemed huge and full of endless possibilities. He and I would spend most days in the yard bouncing on a trampoline and playing with water, rocks, sticks and soil. We started nurturing the old trees and plants, sowing new seeds and began composting. Our adventures in growing food exploded when we DIY’ed our drought-tolerant landscape. That fall we smothered the grass with black cloth, and built up the soil above it. All of our kitchen scraps eventually made their way to the front yard as finished compost. But when our Halloween pumpkins started falling apart on the front porch, we decided to put them directly into the ground. By spring, we had rich beautiful soil. And that summer we watched as a magical pumpkin patch emerged from it. I was in awe of the process, transformed and re’routed (rooted). The images below were taken during that time.
I’ve since become an outdoor educator in addition to working as a photographer. Click here for a list of my upcoming classes:
